The first three UU principles emphasize respect, acceptance and compassion for everyone. Sometimes it’s simpler to do that with people with a different skin color, sexual orientation, gender identity or religious background. But a personality, neurological, or behavioral difference can make us feel more uncomfortable. Is it reasonable to expect ourselves to be unconditionally welcoming, patient and compassionate? And if so, how can we “lean into our discomfort” and be that person our dog or cat thinks we are?
