Given the disturbing number of attacks on local police here on the Cape in recent months, many have begun displaying pro-police images such as “the Thin Blue Line” (a single blue stripe on a plain black background) and the “Blue Lives Matter” flag (a black-and-white American flag with a single blue stripe). What is the origin and underlying meaning of these images? How do they relate to the “Black Lives Matter” movement? Is saying “Black Lives Matter” the same as being anti-police?
